Maradi Complementary site site - Niger
The Maradi site (Niger) is located in a Sahelian climate in a region where actions are carried out to improve agricultural yields, including historical sites of Assisted Natural Regeneration (ANR) and sites developed for irrigation. In this context, the Université de Dan Dicko Dankoulodo de Maradi (UDDM), a long-time partner of AMMA-CATCH, is interested in :
(i) the study of the integration of agroforestry and soil and water conservation (SWC) innovations. This issue is at the heart of the Young International Associate Team PRESAF (2020-2022), led by B-A. Issoufou (UDDM/FASE) and funded by IRD. The JEAI focuses on two sites where vegetation monitoring is conducted, including biomass measurements, leaf transpiration estimation, and soil nutrient measurements ;
(ii) the quantification of groundwater renewal for a sustainable management of the resource within the framework of a rational irrigation. This theme is a continuation of the "Grofutures" project of the UPGro program. In this project, 6 sites on the Goulbi Maradi have been equipped with piezometers with recorders, and limnimetric recorders (Co-leaders : Y. Nazoumou UAM/FAST and M. S. Abdou Babaye UDDM/FST). Nigerien officials wish to continue long-term monitoring of the water table, at least for a limited number of sites.
- to provide rainfall and meteorological monitoring,
- to complete the characterization of the critical zone at a NAS site by including energy balance and groundwater monitoring,
- Include these data, as well as biomass data from JEAI PRESAF, in the AMMA-CATCH database.
On this complementary site, AMMA-CATCH measurements will start in 2021.
